Why the shuttles exist

Since 2017 the Municipality of Norcia has run a system of regulated access to the Pian Grande during the peak flowering weekends. The reason is twofold: to protect the plateau ecosystem (trampling, cars parked all over the meadows, heat dispersal) and to manage the flow of visitors, which on peak days exceeds 20,000 people in 48 hours.

The system is governed by an annual ordinance issued by the Municipality of Norcia together with the Monti Sibillini National Park and the local public-transport carriers (Start, Contram, BUSITALIA).

Upland car parks

The authorised car parks for those arriving by car are four upland lots, spread along the three access routes to the Pian Grande:

  • Forca di Presta (1,534 m, Marche side): for those arriving from Ascoli Piceno / SP477. Capacity ~600 spaces
  • Forca Canapine (1,541 m, Marche side): for those arriving from Arquata del Tronto / SS4 Salaria. Capacity ~400 spaces
  • Monti del Sole (1,420 m, Umbria side): for those arriving from Norcia / SP476. Capacity ~300 spaces
  • Scentinelle (1,580 m, above Castelluccio): closest to the village. Capacity ~200 spaces

Detailed timetables

The Scentinelle line serves the car park closest to the village, with frequent departures every 30 minutes. It is the line we recommend for anyone who wants to enter Castelluccio village.

The Monti del Sole line serves the largest car park on the Umbria side, with departures every 60 minutes. It is the line we recommend for anyone arriving from Norcia.

Tickets and fares

Tickets can be bought in three ways:

  1. Online in advance on the carriers' official sites (Start, Contram). Recommended on peak weekends
  2. On site at the upland car parks, at the carrier's stands. Cash or card
  3. Affiliated tobacconists in the town of Norcia, before heading up

Fares are published each year in the municipal ordinance. In recent years the return ticket has settled at around 5–7 euros per adult, with reductions for children and free travel for under-6s.

What to bring on the shuttle

  • Water: at altitude the air is dry, staying hydrated is essential
  • Hat and sunscreen: there is no shade on the Pian Grande
  • Windproof jacket: the weather changes in minutes, even in July
  • Closed shoes: the plateau is not paved and the meadows are uneven
  • A reusable bottle and no single-use plastic (in line with the National Park rules)

Frequently asked questions about the shuttles

Can I drive to Castelluccio on peak weekends?

No. On the regulated weekends (21–22 June, 27–29 June, 4–5 July, 11–12 July 2026) private cars cannot reach the village. You have to park in one of the four upland car parks and continue by shuttle.

How much is a shuttle ticket?

The official 2026 fares will be confirmed by the municipal ordinance. In recent years the return ticket has settled at around 5–7 euros per adult, with reductions for children.

Do I need to book in advance?

Not required, but strongly recommended for the peak weekends (27–28 June and 4–5 July). Queues at the stands can exceed an hour on the busiest days.

Do the shuttles run on weekdays too?

No. The service runs only on the four regulated weekends of 2026. On weekdays and unregulated weekends, access by car is free (while still respecting the National Park rules).

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, dogs are allowed on the shuttles (in some cases with a muzzle and lead). On the Pian Grande the dog must be kept on a lead at all times so as not to disturb the wildlife and the grazing animals.

What happens if it rains?

The shuttles run as normal. In the rain the Pian Grande turns muddy and the flowers partly close: the sight is less spectacular but just as captivating. Bring a waterproof jacket and boots.
